Bhubaneswar: A tractor driver was injured after being shot at by some youths of his village at Mahidharpur near Athagarh in Cuttack district on Wednesday.
Some youths of Mahidharpur tried to extort money from the tractor driver Biswajit Palei while he was busy in road construction work.
When he did not respond, one of them opened fire at him. The accused and the victim are from Mahidharpur village.
According to reports, Biswajit was engaged in road construction work, while Dilu Dalei of Mahidharpur and three others tried to extort money from him.
When he refused to pay, the youths beat him severely. One of them suddenly shot at Biswajit and ran away. Biswajit was first taken to Athagarh Health Centre and later shifted to Cuttack.
His condition is stated to be serious as the bullet hit his stomach.
Meanwhile, police reached the spot and launched an investigation.
