Bhubaneswar: A man came under the wheels of a speeding truck carrying garbage near Daruthenga on outskirts of the city today. CCTV footage showed the truck, heading towards the dump yard at Bhuasuni, was moving at a very high speed.
The fully-loaded vehicle, turned towards its right across the road divider in an uncontrolled manner, and ran over the man who was on a bicycle, killing him on the spot.
The deceased was a tribal man working as a labourer in the city. The incident triggered an instant strike and a roadblock with people of Daruthenga demanding immediate stoppage of soid waste dumping at Bhausuni yard.
Led by Jatni MLA Suresh Routray and Daruthenga Sarpanch, the villagers also demanded compensation for the family of the deceased and an inquiry into the incident by the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC).
“There is no registration plate on this truck which caused the accident. The fitness of these vehicles is questionable and for sure there was a mechanical failure of brakes which led to the fatal mishap,” Routray said.
A team from the BMC, led by Mayor Sulochana Das and Municipal Commissioner Vijaya Amruta Kulange rushed to the spot and tried to pacifiy the striking villagers.
Das consoled the bereaved family and paid them an instant financial relief of Rs 5 lakh and promised a job to the son of the deceased at BMC. Following this, the agitation dissoved and traffic movement was back to normal.
