Sambalpur: In a tragic incident, a farmer was trampled to death by a tusker on Sunday night while he was guarding his agricultural field from invading pachyderms. The incident has been reported from Hatibari in Odisha’s Sambalpur district.
The deceased farmer has been identified as Ganesh Bhoi of Tengpada village.
According to reports, a herd of elephants invade the paddy fields of the farmers in Hatibari every night and destroy the crops. Last night, Ganesh went to his field guard the crop from the invading elephants. Unfortunately, he encountered a tusker in his field and the animal trampled him to death.
On Monday morning, when the local villagers went to the field outside their village, they found Ganesh’s mutilated body and informed his family members and the Forest department.
The Forest department personnel are investigating into the incident. On the other hand, as the news of Ganesh’s death spread, tension prevailed in the area. People have been demanding compensation to Ganesh’s kin and protection from the elephants.
