Balasore: Police have arrested two persons, including a woman, in connection with the murder of a young man inside a hotel room in Balasore district.

The arrests were made on Sunday night, and the accused were produced in court on Monday.

The case has drawn widespread attention in Balasore and neighbouring Mayurbhanj district due to the involvement of close friends and the circumstances surrounding the crime.

The arrested accused are Ram Chandra Singh and his girlfriend Jenamani Singh. The deceased has been identified as Akash Mahanta, a resident of the Jambani area under Dantiamuha police outpost within Betanoti police station limits of Mayurbhanj district. The murder took place on the night of June 25 within the jurisdiction of Sahadevkhunta police station, though it came to light on June 27, following which police launched an investigation.

According to police, Ram Chandra Singh was arrested from the Betanoti area, while Jenamani Singh was arrested from the Jaraka area of Jajpur district on Sunday night. The details of the case were shared by City DSP Nirmala Gochhayat and Sahadevkhunta IIC Biranchi Sahu during a press conference on Monday.

Police said the deceased, the accused friend and the woman had stayed together in a single hotel room on the night of the incident. During this time, the accused were allegedly under the influence of alcohol. A dispute reportedly erupted over an illicit relationship, which escalated into violence, leading to the death of Akash Mahanta. Investigators revealed that all three individuals involved in the incident are married.

During the course of the investigation, police have seized liquor bottles, clothes and several documents connected to the case.

Further investigation is continuing to establish the complete sequence of events and determine any additional involvement.
