Puri: In a shocking incident that has rattled a village in Puri district, a 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped by two of her distant relatives. The crime occurred on the night of October 22, exploiting the commotion of a nearby Kali Puja idol immersion procession, police reported on Friday.
According to the police, the accused, identified as a brother and uncle from the same village, allegedly entered the survivor’s home in the Chandanapur police station area when she was alone and committed the crime.
Bhuben Mohan Samantaray, the Inspector-in-charge (IIC) of Chandanapur police station, confirmed the developments to reporters. “We have received a written complaint from the victim and conducted her medical examination,” IIC Samantaray said. “The two accused persons have been detained and further investigation is in progress.”
Preliminary investigations suggest that the alleged assault was motivated by a past dispute, though the specific nature of the dispute has not been disclosed by the police.
Police stated that, based on the survivor’s complaint, a formal case will be registered against the detained individuals. The charges will be framed under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The police have also indicated that medical examinations of the accused and other legal formalities are being carried out.
