Bhubaneswar: Two vibrant orange coloured electric double-decker buses, showcasing Odisha’s rich cultural heritage, are set to arrive from Mumbai ahead of the upcoming Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrations.
The buses feature artistic designs depicting iconic landmarks like the Konark Sun Temple wheel and the Dhauli stupa, offering a tribute to the state’s history and artistry.
The buses have already covered 400 km on their journey from Mumbai and are expected to reach Odisha within a day or two. A trial run will be conducted before the celebrations begin to ensure seamless operation.
According to the Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT), three more electric double-decker buses will soon join the fleet, making a total of five buses in the first phase. These buses will serve Khordha, Puri, and Cuttack districts, providing a modern, eco-friendly, and culturally significant mode of transportation.
The initiative aligns with the state government’s efforts to promote clean and green mobility while enhancing transport infrastructure. CRUT has signed a 10-year contract with a private organization for the supply, operation, and maintenance of the buses. The contract includes provisions for an extension of up to two additional years if required.
CRUT’s plan emphasizes the use of green energy, ensuring sustainable operations under a Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model. This initiative is a significant step toward cleaner transport solutions while celebrating Odisha’s cultural identity, particularly as the state prepares to host guests for the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.
