Angul: Two elephants were electrocuted to death after they came into contact with an electric mesh laid to trap wild boars near Siskata village under Dhanadatopa range in Odisha’s Angul district.
According to reports, an 11 KV power line was hooked and connected to a mesh for hunting wild boars in l near the Sidhakata forest beat under Sapghara panchayat. Panicked over the death of two elephants, poachers fled with the electric wire.
Local residents spotted the carcass of the two elephants and informed the Ashtamali forest office. A Forest Department team led by Angul RCCF Sudshanshu Shekhar Khora and comprising Ashtamali DFO Satya Koppula, ACF Dibyasingh Majhi, and Ranger Babrubahan Sahu reached the spot and undertook an investigation.
The dead elephant was about 20 years old. The elephant carcasses were buried there by a veterinary surgeon at Ashtamali. The Forest Department has detained two persons from Sidhakata villagr in connection with the crime and is interrogating them.
On September 10, an elephant died of electrocution in Rourkela of Sundargarh district in Odisha. According to reports, the elephant died after coming in contact with a live wire at a forest near Nuagaon under Lathikata panchayat.
