Cuttack: In two simultaneous raids, gambling dens were busted- one at Saantsahi under Purighat Police Station and at Beparisahi under Mangalabag Police Station. A total of 14 people were arrested.
The Police acted based on a tip-off. Apart from 14 people getting arrested, cash of Rs 15,000, 6 motorcycles, and 10 mobile phones were seized.
The arrested individuals are Chintamani Pradhan(35), Md.Ahmed(35), Sachidananda Rout(35), Babu Sahu(35), Gopinath Moharana(38), Radheshyam Rout(35), Kalandi Mulia(49), Prasanta Kumar Nayak(43), Kailash Ch. Rana (60), Kalu Rao, Ranjan Kumar Nayak, and Sankar Rao. All of the arrested hail from different areas of the silver city.
They will be forwarded to court soon.
Gambling in India is heavily restricted except for selective categories including lotteries and horse racing. The Public Gambling Act of 1867 is a central law that prohibits running or being in charge of a public gambling house. The penalty for breaking this law is a fine of ?200 or imprisonment of up to 3 months. Additionally, this Act prohibits visiting gambling houses. A fine of ?100 or imprisonment of up to one month is the penalty.
