**Rourkela: ** Two persons were killed and three injured after a car ran-amok on a busy Ring Road area of the Steel City on Saturday night. The incident occurred at around 6:30 pm when a speeding Maruti Ertiga car ran over a student, Manish Prasad, a resident of sector 21, naya bazaar and a +2 commerce student of Ispat College, Rourkela after which it collided with a motorcyclist and a scooter. He died within half an hour after being rushed to the Ispat General Hospital.
The motorcyclist, 60-year-old Pitabash Padhi sustained critical injuries where he succumbed today afternoon in the ICU. The scooter rider, a woman has been discharged from the hospital and is recovering.
The incident led to an outrage among the locals who laid siege to the Ring Road on Sunday morning, demanding compensation for the kin of the deceased. The agitation spiraled by noon when a team of police was attacked by the protesters who also damaged the PCR vans.
The situation was controlled after five platoons force led by Rourkela SP Uma Sankar Dash rushed to the spot and baton charged the mob. Three injured policemen including Gopabandhupali SI Digvijay Biswal have been shifted to the IGH. Their condition is stated to be critical.
The accident on Saturday night, locals said is a re-run of many such incidents which are common place on the Ring Road. The car driver, sources said was driving under the influence of alcohol.
