Sundargarh: In a tragic consequence of continuous heavy rainfall, two persons — including a woman — lost their lives in separate incidents of wall collapse in Sundargarh district on Tuesday.
The deceased have been identified as Banadui Bage (70) and Damani Seth, both residents of Koida block, one of the worst-hit regions in the district due to relentless rains over the past two days.
According to reports, Banadui Bage, a resident of Lohartoda village, died in his sleep when an earthen wall of his house gave way under the pressure of rain-soaked mud and debris.
In a separate incident, Damani Seth of Motu Hanuman village also met a similar fate when the mud wall of her house, weakened by constant rainfall, collapsed on her while she was asleep. She died on the spot.
Officials said the incessant rainfall has left many mud houses in the Koida region structurally compromised, raising concerns about more such incidents if the weather persists.
Local authorities have been alerted, and rescue and relief measures have been initiated in vulnerable areas. The administration has also urged residents living in kachha (mud) structures to shift to safer locations temporarily.
