Bhubaneswar: The two-month restriction on fishing along the Odisha coast has been lifted by the Fisheries department, allowing the fishermen to resume their activities in the sea.
The fishing community are now allowed to use mechanised vessels for fishing activities.
The ban will remain in force in particular regions in the sea due to some activities of DRDO.
The Fisheries Department imposed restrictions on fishing by mechanised vessels from April 15 to June 14 in a bid to conserve fish during the breeding period.
The ‘fishing ban’ was imposed under Section 4 of the Odisha Marine Fishing Regulation Act, 1982 to avoid disturbances caused by trawlers and other machines used for fishing activities.
Small, non-mechanised boats and the use of nets with big gaps, were exempted from the ban. The prohibition was slapped during the breeding season of the fish in order to conserve the fisheries resources.
