Balasore: Town Police detained two women for allegedly attempting to steal a 7-day-old baby girl from the Balasore District Headquarters Hospital late on Tuesday night.

The incident occurred around 2:30 am when the accused women reportedly snatched the infant from her mother’s arms while she was sleeping in the maternity ward.

The newborn girl was born to Satyabrata Das from the Aruhabruti area under Bhogarai block in Balasore district. When Satyabrat’s wife screamed after realising her baby was being taken, the women dropped the infant and attempted to flee. They were caught by locals and handed over to the Town police.

The accused women, hailing from Kharagpur and Balasore, are currently under police custody. The police are investigating the matter to determine the motives behind the attempted theft.
