Bhubaneswar: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has formed a Fact-Finding Committee to investigate the recent student suicides at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Bhubaneswar.
The committee, chaired by Prof. Nageshwar Rao, former Vice Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), will examine the circumstances surrounding the incidents and suggest measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
The committee members include Prof. Shashikala Wanjari, Vice Chancellor, National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), Prof. HCS Rathore, former Vice Chancellor, Central University of South Bihar, Dr. Sunita Siwach, Joint Secretary, University Grants Commission, as the coordinating officer.
“In view of the two consecutive suicide incidents at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Bhubaneswar on February 16, 2025 and May 1, 2025, the University Grants Commission (UGC), as the regulatory body, has decided to constitute a fact-finding committee to examine the circumstances surrounding these incidents and ensure compliance with student welfare and safety regulations and further suggesting measures to prevent such incidents,” read an order issued by the UGC.
The committee will investigate the following aspects:
– Institutional policies and academic pressure
– Grievance redressal mechanisms and student support structures
– Mental health support system, including counseling services and crisis intervention frameworks
– Compliance with student welfare and safety regulations
– Implementation of student safety and well-being policies
The panel will also engage with stakeholders, including students, faculty, and administrators, to assess the institutional culture and challenges faced. The UGC has directed the committee to submit a detailed report with findings and recommendations within 10 days.
The UGC’s decision comes after two consecutive student suicides at KIIT, one on February 16, 2025, and another on May 1, 2025.
