Bhubaneswar: The Orissa High Court on Wednesday issued notices to State Election Commission (SEC), Chief Secretary and the Secretaries of Panchayati Raj, and Housing & Urban Development Department over the delay in conduct of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) elections.
The High Court has directed them to submit their replies within four weeks.
Addressing the media, senior BJP leader of the state and advocate Pitambar Acharya said as elections to 114 ULBs have not been held for the last 3 years, petitions in this regard had been filed at the High Court.
He said that it is the constitutional responsibility of the SEC to hold ULB and panchayat elections every 5 years like Assembly and Lok Sabha polls. As the SEC failed to act on ULB polls, petitions in this regard was filed by former Minister Samir Dey, former bureaucrat Prasanna Minister and Puri MLA Jayanta Sarangi.
