Bhubaneswar: An undertrial prisoner succumbed to his ailments while undergoing treatment at the Kandhamal District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Odisha on Wednesday.
According to reports, one Abhiram Dagyal of Dimirikuda village in Phiringia of Odisha’s Kandhamal district surrendered before the police after a non-bailable warrant (NBW) was issued against him in connection with a case about marijuana smuggling. Soon after, he was sent to the Phulbani District Jail where he was lodged as an undertrial prisoner.
Abhiram fell ill while in jail and was shifted to the hospital where he succumbed to his ailments on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Abhiram’s family alleged that he was in good health when he was sent to jail, but fell ill due to brutal treatment by the police. His sister alleged that Abhiram was beaten up mercilessly in jail. The police have seized his body and initiated an investigation into his death.
Phulbani SDPO Suprasanna Mallik said that Abhiram was admitted to the hospital due to illness while in jail. The autopsy has been done and it will be clear whether he died due to police atrocity or ailments after the autopsy report was available, Mallik said.
