Bhubaneswar: Steel and Mines Department Minister Prafulla Kumar Mallick has urged Union Minister for Steel Dharmendra Pradhan to intervene and expedite up-gradation of Ispat General Hospital (IGH) into a medical college.
Mallik’s shot the letter to Pradhan after the Chief Minister’s Office received an invitation (on March 10) for the inauguration of a 200-bedded super speciality hospital by upgrading IGH.
In his letter, Mallik said that on April 2, 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that IGH will be converted into a medical college and Super Speciality Hospital. The work in this regard was being carried out by the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), which functions under the Union Steel Ministry.
“However, IGH was only converted into a 200-bedded Super Speciality Hospital, not into a full-fledged medical college even after six years of the Prime Minister’s announcement,” Mallik’s letter read. He urged Pradhan to intervene and direct the RSP to expedite the work.
In 2015, former Union Steel Minister Narendra Singh Tomar had also assured the then MP of Sundergarh that the work on medical college will begin soon.
The region (Sundergarh district and Rourkela) has abundant reserves of minerals and the people here work hard for the development of our country. If Rourkela Steel Plant has earned a name in India and abroad, the people of the city are the major contributors to it.
“With the conversion of IGH into a medical college, the people of Rourkela would have been immensely benefitted,” Mallik added.
“I am personally very disappointed at this development of converting IGH into a super-speciality hospital instead of a medical college. I personally urge you to intervene in this matter and direct the RSP officials to build a medical college at IGH,” Mallik’s letter further stated.
