**Angul:** In an unfortunate incident on the festive occasion of 68th Republic Day, an aggrieved family of the district tried to attempt self immolation outside the stadium here during the district-level celebration of the national festival.
Timely intervention of the police personnel deployed there could prevent such a mishap.
While the wife, identified as Ranjita Dehury (35), has been admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) here, the father, Santosh Dehury (48) and their two daughters, Suchismita (14) and Subhasmita (11) have been detained by the Angul Town Police.
The upset family members belong to Raniguda village, 3-4 km away from the Angul Sadar Police Station.
While Suchismita is a Class IX student, Subhasmita is in Class VI and she being a meritorious student has been awarded with scholarship in both Class III and V.
For the last two years they have allegedly been meted out injustice by Santosh’s younger brother over property dispute. Worst of it, the allegedly cruel younger brother attempted murder bid on his sister-in-law, Ranjita, six months back following which she has injury scars on her neck and other parts of her body.
Santosh lamented that he has earlier desperately knocked the doors of district police, district administration, Odisha Chief Minister, Prime Minister and President of India for justice, but all in vain.
Eventually, the crestfallen family found no way out except opting for this drastic step.
All of them had poured kerosene on their bodies and were about to set themselves on fire when the cops present there could fortunately notice and aborted the self-immolation bid.
In her media reactions, Ranjita rued, “If being citizens of this nation fail to get justice, we at last decided to end our lives on this Republic Day.”
On being asked about such a shocking incident, Angul Collector Anil Samal said, “We’ll look into the case and see the family gets justice as per the law.”
Notably, the Collector along with the whole district administration was busy with the Republic Day parade inside the stadium when the incident took place outside the stadium gate and later came to know from the media men.
By the time media tried to get the reactions of the chief guest, School and Mass Education Minister Debi Prasad Mishra, he had already left the venue.
