Bhubaneswar: The Utkal University Campus on Monday virtually turned into a fortress ahead of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s visit to inaugurate a slew of projects. To maintain the law and order situation, the Commissionerate Police deployed around 30 platoons of force in and around the campus.
Tension prevailed the entire day when some Congress and ABVP activists staged protest in front of the main gate of the varsity besides pasting some posters against Naveen Patnaik at various places on the campus.
According to reports, at least 50 student activists of Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishada (ABVP) and Congress were detained who were trying to disrupt the programme.
As some Congress activists had hurled eggs on the CM’s car during his last visit to the university, the cops on Monday left no stone unturned to ensure that the event is completed smoothly.
In the evening, the Chief Minister inaugurated two hostels ( one for boys, one for girls) and a sports complex in the presence of university Vice-Chancellor (VC) Ashok Das and other officials.
Besides CM, Higher Education Minister Pradeep Panigarhi, Sports Minister Sudam Marandi, Bhubaneswar MP Prasanna Patsani among others were present on the occasion.
