Bhubaneswar: Prior to assuming office on January 31, new Vice-Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS) Lt Gen Chandi Prasad Mohanty wished to visit his birthplace Odisha as he would be the first ever Odia to adorn a coveted post in Indian Army.
He is expected to have darshan of Lord Jagannath at Puri as well as call on Odisha Governor and Chief Minister during his present tour.
Soon after landing at the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) here today, the able son of soil in his media reactions said, “This good news came yesterday. I feel very fortunate today after landing on my birthplace. I’m feeling elated.”
On being enquired about his priority areas, especially in Odisha context, the new Vice-Chief of Army Staff replied, “Let me join first and then watch what can be done for Odisha as my responsibility as the Vice-Chief of Army Staff has been manifold now.”
Responding to another media query, he said, “Let me see if the figure of vacancy can be enhanced or not. If possible, something may be done for Odisha aspirants.”
He informed that he has been in regular touch with the District Sainik Boards so that something welfare measures could be undertaken for the ex-service men.
On the long-standing demand of formation of Kalinga Regiment in Indian Army, the new VCOAS remarked, “It would be improper to comment now on the Kalinga Regiment issue.”
Notably, Lt Gen Mohanty is a native of Jagatsinghpur and was born in Jayabada. His father, JK Mohanty was a civil servant and his mother Dr Sarada Kumari Mohanty was an Odia professor. He takes over as the 42nd VCOAS of the Indian Army from Lt Gen Satinder Kumar Saini.
