Very Heavy Rain Likely To Pound Odisha During Next 4 Days: IMD

Bhubaneswar: The depression over west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 13 kmph and lay centered at 0830 hours IST on Monday about 280 km east of Kalingapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 230 km east-southeast of Gopalpur (Odisha), 260 km south-southeast of Paradip (Odisha) and 390 km south of Digha (West Bengal).

It is very likely to move nearly northwards towards north Odisha-West Bengal coasts and intensify into a deep depression during next 24 hours. Thereafter, it is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross Odisha and adjoining West Bengal coasts between Puri and Digha around Monday evening/night. Continuing to move further west-northwestwards, it is likely to move across Odisha and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand and adjoining north Chhattisgarh during the subsequent the days.

Heavy rainfall warning for the next four days as follows:

Day-1: (Valid up to 0830 Hrs IST of 09.09.24)

Orange warning (Be Prepared to take action): Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) is very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, and Puri.

Impact and action suggested

  • Temporarily water logging likely in low lying areas and underpass road.
  • Poor visibility during intense spell of rain and traffic congestion in urban areas.
  • Some damages to kutchha Road and possibility of wall collapsed of vulnerable kutchha houses. Some damages to vegetables and horticultural crops likely.
  • Avoid staying in vulnerable kutchha houses. Advisory on traffic congestion may be followed before leaving for your destination.
  • Arrangement for drainage of excess water from nursery bed, preparations for sowing of paddy crops, seed collections may be done.
  • Mudslides/landslides in vulnerable hilly areas.

Yellow Warning (Be Aware): Heavy Rainfall (7 to 11cm) is very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Khurda, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Boudh, Sonepur, Bolangir, Nuapada, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Bhadrak, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kadhamal, Sambalpur, and Bargarh.

Day-2: (Valid from 0830 Hrs IST of 09.09.24 to 0830 Hrs IST of 10.09.24.)

Red warning (Take Action): Scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) with isolated extremely heavy rainfall (>20cm) is very likely to in the districts of Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Khurdha, Cuttack, and Dhenkanal.

Impact and action suggested

  • Flash flood/Water logging in low lying areas, inundation of agriculture field, mudslides/landslides in vulnerable hilly areas.
  • Possibility of some damage to informal/Kutcha road, wall collapsed of vulnerable kutcha houses.
  • iii) Water logging in underpass road and occasional reduction of visibility causing traffic congestion in urban areas.
  • It may lead to significant rise in water level of rivers.
  • Keep arrangement for drainage of excess water from nursery bed, preparations for sowing of paddy crops, seed collections may be done.
  • Avoid movement in affected areas, stay in safe place.
  • Postponed fertilizer/chemicals application in agricultural field, keep livestock in safe place.
  • Mining activity may be judicially regulated.
  • Avoid staying in vulnerable kutchha houses. Advisory on traffic congestion may be followed before leaving for your destination.

  • Temporarily water logging likely in low lying areas and underpass road.
  • Poor visibility during intense spell of rain and traffic congestion in urban areas.

Day-3: (Valid from 0830 Hrs IST of 10.09.24 to 0830 Hrs IST of 11.09.24.)

Orange warning (Be Prepared to take action): Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) is very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, and Sambalpur.

Yellow Warning (Be Aware): Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Bargarh, Sonepur, Deogarh, Angul, Boudh and Keonjhar.

Day-4: (Valid from 0830 Hrs IST of 11.09.24 to 0830 Hrs IST of 12.09.24.)

Yellow Warning (Be Aware): Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Sundargarh.

Khurda, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Boudh, Sonepur, Bolangir, Nuapada, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Bhadrak, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kadhamal, Sambalpur, and Bargarh.
