Bhubaneswar: Veteran Congress leader and Jatni MLA Suresh Kumar Routray, popularly known as Sura Routray, on Thursday announced his retirement from electoral politics. Addressing a press conference in the capital city, Sura said he will not contest any election in the future.
Rout, who paid a courtesy to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday to convey his decision, said that his younger son Manmath Routray will now content the Jatni Assembly seat in Odisha.
Routray was elected to the Odisha Legislative Assembly six times from the Jatni constituency. He won the Assembly seat as a Janata Party candidate in 1977 and as a Congress candidate in 1980, 1985, 1995, 2000 and 2019.
“I will not contest elections any more. Having worked in Congress for over 55 years, I am already 80 years. Now my youngest son Manmath will contest from Jatani on Congress ticket,” the octogenarian Congress leader said.
