Bhubaneswar: Court of the Special Judge, Vigilance, Sundargarh today convicted and sentenced Laxmipriya Mahanta, retired headmistress of Taken Over UP School, K Balang in Sundargarh district to undergo rigorous imprisonment (RI) for a period of one year for taking a bribe to issue School Leaving Certificate to a person for her son.
The court has also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on Mahanta and in default of payment of the fine she has to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of 2 months, said an official press release.
The court pronounced the sentence for the offence under section 13(2) read with 13(1)(d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
The court further sentenced her to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of 6 months and to pay a fine of Rs 3,000, and in default of payment of the fine, to undergo further rigorous imprisonment for a period of 1 month for the offence under section 7 of PC Act, 1988. Both sentences are to run concurrently.
Odisha Vigilance will now move the competent authority for stopping of pension of Mahanta following her conviction, the release further said.
