Bhubaneswar: In a major crackdown on corruption, the Odisha Vigilance has arrested Baikuntha Nath Sarangi, Chief Engineer, Plan Roads, RW Department, on charges of possessing disproportionate assets.
According to sources, the vigilance team conducted raids on Sarangi’s properties and found assets worth crores, including cash, properties, and luxury items, which he couldn’t satisfactorily account for.
He was found in possession of disproportionate assets, including cash seized over Rs 2.56 crores, 2 multi-storeyed buildings, 2 flats and 7 high-value plots.
Further investigation revealed significant bank deposits amounting to Rs 1.5 crore and investments worth Rs 2.7 crore in shares, mutual funds, and insurance. The seized assets also include over 1.141 kg of gold and 15 imported costly wrist watches.
The vigilance team reportedly found Sarangi trying to dispose of bundles of Rs 500 notes by throwing them out of his Bhubaneswar flat window as they arrived to conduct the search.
A case (Cuttack Vigilance PS case No.14/2025) has been registered against Sarangi, and he will be forwarded to the Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Angul.
The investigation is ongoing.
