Vigilance Raids Houses Of Suspended Sambalpur Jailer

**Sambalpur: ** Simultaneous raids were conducted on Friday by Odisha Vigilance sleuths on the residence and paternal house of Sushant Rout, the suspended jailer of Sambalpur Circle Jail.

Later in the day, he was also arrested by the Odisha Vigilance and forwarded to court.

Vigilance has also applied for remand of the arrested jailer of Sambalpur Circle Jail for further interrogation.

Notably, over Rs 18 lakh was recovered from his chamber during a raid on the jail on June 4 by the Odisha Police.

The raid on the houses and office is an outcome of a vigilance probe recommended by Additional Director General (Prisons) Arun Kumar Ray after suspending Rout on Thursday following the objectionable amount of cash and mobile phones seized from his office chamber on Sunday last.

Briefing media, Jagannath Nayak, SP, Vigilance, Sambalpur Division said, “The raids today being conducted on the allegations of owning disproportionate assets against known sources of income. On June 4 during the raid on the jail, over Rs 18 lakh cash was recovered from his office chamber. Simulataneous raids are being conducted on his official quarters, office here as well as his native place Kalyanpur under Binjharpur police limits in Jajpur district. A team of our sleuths are also scanning his bank accounts.”

Prior to the vigilance probe recommendation by the ADG (Prisons), a joint probe by two DIG-level officers had been ordered on Tuesday last by him in connection with the seizure of the cash, 9 mobiles, narcotics and other objectionable items from the jailor’s chamber.

Jailer Rout could not substantiate his claims during the probe that the seized cash belong to the prisoner as well as advance money for purchase of jail materials.

Notably, simultaneous raids had been conducted in 13 prisons across Odisha, including Choudwar Circle Jail, Jharpada Special Jail, Sambalpur Circle Jail and Keonjhar jail on June 4 to keep a tab on the crime syndicate operating from prisons.
