Jharsuguda: Residents of Bhurkamunda, Katikela, and nearby villages staged protests outside the Vedanta Aluminium Plant gates in Jharsuguda, demanding resolutions to pollution-related issues.
The protesters claimed that the plant’s operations have led to various health problems and environmental degradation in the areas. They alleged that despite their demands, the company has failed to take adequate measures to address these issues. They also expressed disappointment over the lack of employment opportunities for local residents despite the acquisition of their land.
The protesters have warned that they will not lift the blockade until their demands are met, including proper compensation, employment opportunities, and measures to mitigate the environmental impact of the plant’s operations.
“We were promised jobs and a better life, but it’s been a broken promise. Besides, rampant pollution has made our lives miserable. Even after holding several meetings, the authorities failed to address our concerns. They are hiring outsiders instead of locals, and those who are employed are getting low salaries. How can one survive on Rs 8-10,000 a month?” said Sabita Karali, a protester.
The protesters have blocked the plant gates, refusing to lift the blockade until their demands are met.
