Bhubaneswar: Due to human error by polling officials and dereliction of duty, voting was adjourned in six booths during the second-phase polling today. The booths where polling has been adjourned and re-polling has been recommended are- Booth No. 129 of Bonai assembly constituency, Booth No. 213 of Sundargarh assembly constituency, booths 210 and 222 of Daspalla assembly constituency, booth number 68 in Bargarh assembly constituency and booth number 235 in Attabira assembly constituency.
Giving the example of Booth No. 129 in Bonai, Chief Electoral Officer Surendra Kumar explained, “As you know, Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections are being held simultaneously in Odisha therefore two machines are being used. One of the EVM machines showed ‘low voltage’ signal and had to be replaced. When the repairs were being made, the Section Officer mistakenly cross-paired VVPAT machine of Lok Sabha with EVM of Vidhan Sabha.”
“One of the voters noticed that his vote was not being cast correctly following which he complained to the Presiding Officer. He was accompanied by the polling agents to re-cast his vote when the officials noticed the problem,” he added.
Soon after that, voting was adjourned in all these booths. The CEO reiterated that this was not a technical problem and was human error instead. “We have given pocketbooks to first polling officers and presiding officers. Still, such a mistake occurred. Action will be taken against the erring officers for dereliction of duty”, concluded Kumar.
