Sambalpur: An engineering girl student of the Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) in Burla of Odisha’s Sambalpur district committed suicide by jumping off the Power Channel Bridge at around 10.00 pm on Tuesday.
The Burla police and personnel from the Burla Fire Services launched an extensive search in the power channel last night but could not trace the girl’s body. On being informed, VSSUT Vice Chancellor Prof Bansidhar Majhi reached the spot to take stock of the situation.
The search operation resumed this morning and the girl’s body was eventually recovered from near the Power Channel Bridge 10 hours after she jumped into the water.
The victim has been identified as Chinmayi Priyadarshani Sahu from the Rampur area of Kalahandi district. She was a B-Tech final year student of the Information Technology department at the VSSUT. According to reports, Chinmayi attended the convocation ceremony of the institute on Tuesday evening and later went to a nearby power channel along with her male classmate Pritikant De of BJB College in Bhubaneswar.
There, Chinmayi suddenly jumped into the deep water of the power channel from the bridge.
The reason why the student committed suicide by jumping into the power channel is yet to be ascertained. Police are continuing further investigation in this regard.
