Burla (Sambalpur): In a tragic incident, Saswati Bhoi, a final-year Electrical Engineering student at VSSUT (Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology), drowned in the Hirakud Dam on Thursday during a picnic with friends.
Saswati, a native of Bargarh, had gone for an outing with a group of eight fellow students to the fishery area of the reservoir.
According to reports, the tragic mishap occurred while she was bathing. Her friends quickly pulled her out and rushed her to VIMSAR (Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research) in Burla. However, doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Burla police have seized the body and placed it in the morgue as part of the ongoing investigation. The incident has left her classmates, university staff, and the local community in deep shock and mourning.
Further inquiry is underway to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.
