Bhubaneswar: The Sambalpur Police on Tuesday clarified that Chinmayee Priyadarshini Sahu, a former BTech student of Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) in Burla, was not murdered but she died by drowning.

Addressing a press meeting today, Sambalpur SP B Gangadhar said the post-mortem report of Chinmayee clearly shows that her death was due to drowning.

At the same time, the SP said, “We are, however, investigating the circumstances that led to her drowning. The investigation is still on to ascertain whether it is a case of accidental drowning or something else.”

Stating that the probe into Chinmayee’s death is far from being over, the SP added, “We are trying to ascertain that if she committed suicide who abetted her to take the extreme step. The truth will come out once we get the viscera report,” the SP said.

Two of her friends Preetiman Dey and Manas Tudu, who have been detained at the police station, will be released soon after giving an undertaking that they will cooperate with the investigation. “If necessary, both of them will be called to the police station again for questioning,” the SP added.

On Monday night, the police recreated Chinmayee’s death scene with Pritiman and Manas. Pritiman has been asked to stay in Burla for seven days.

Meanwhile, the Burla police have recovered the bag, laptop and other documents of Chinmayee from her rented house at BJB Nagar area in Bhubaneswar.

Talking to the media on Tuesday, Preetiman’s’ father claimed that his son was innocent and some people were trying to defame his son and the family.

It is worth mentioning here that Chinmayee had gone missing On February 28 after jumping off the Power Channel Bridge in Sambalpur after attending the VSSUT convocation ceremony and receiving the degree from the Vice Chancellor.

At around 8.00 pm, she went to the PC Bridge with her friends and allegedly jumped into the water channel. Her body was found on March 1, 2023.
