Puri: A notorious and wanted criminal Santu alias Santosh Barik on Monday was injured in an encounter by the police in Girala forest in Puri district.
According to the police, based on intelligence input that Santu armed with a firearm was moving near Girala jungle, a police team led by IIC Sadar Puri Sadar Balhabagrahi Pradhan and others proceeded there.
On seeing the police, Santu opened fire at the police team resulting in an exchange of fire between the two. Following the exchange of fire, Santu was nabbed with a bleeding injury on his right leg.
He has been shifted to the district headquarters hospital here for treatment.
One pistol and two rounds of live ammunition have been seized from the spot. Sub Inspector Narayan Pradhan and Assistant Sub Inspector Sanjeet Kumar Kanar of Brahmagiri police station sustained minor injuries during the exchange of fire.
Santu has multiple criminal cases registered against his name in the Brahmagiri police station.
