**Bhubaneswar:** As urban water-logging has emerged as a new threat and challenge for saving life and property these days during rainy seasons and torrential rains, Odisha Fire & Disaster Response Academy here is bracing up their personnel to handle urban flooding for which the State Government has been providing the requisite equipment and ample pumps for dewatering operations.
This was informed by Fire Services, Home Guards and Civil Defence DG Bijay Kumar Sharma on the special occasion of a felicitation programme for the stupendous service delivered by the Fire personnel.
The Fire Service DG said, “A few days back in the areas of Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Puri flood like situation had arisen. The personnel of Fire Services played a pivotal role in saving life and property. Those reports were widely published in print and electronic media.”
“In a bid to felicitate those who have done this task with dedication and also encourage others, we had arranged this meeting. Some of them have been given away letters of appreciation. Many others have also worked very well. They will also be given away the letters of appreciation through their superiors,” he informed.
He further informed, “Besides the main act of our department to douse fire, disaster response has also been added as a main act. We’re preparing ourselves now to handle urban flooding. Responding to our proposals, the State Government has provided more equipment and pumps to deal with urban flooding. Special clothing equipment like gumboot, helmet, waterproof dress have been sanctioned.”
During the occasion, a lady denizen of the capital city was of all praise for the Fire personnel for having recently saved her mother from drowning in river Kuakhai.
In her media reactions, she said, “I’m really thankful to Odisha Fire Services for the fast and rapid action of saving the life of my mother. It was under the guidance of Majhi Sir the way the personnel acted so fast is praiseworthy. That day the river was in spate. The Fire personnel were least bothered about their own lives treating my mother as one among their own family members. Their dedication has helped to get my mother back. I’m really thankful to everyone,” she extolled.
