Bhubaneswar: FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup championship is all set to kick off on Friday at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar and the newly-constructed Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Odisha’s Rourkela.
The Indian hockey team led by Harmanpreet Singh will take the field against Spain in their opening game of Group D at Rourkela on Friday. The Indian team come to the tournament after a reasonably successful 2022 when they finished with a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022, and a first-ever bronze medal at the FIH Pro League.
India are placed 6th in the rankings, and Spain are placed 8th in the international hockey rankings. This as well as the advantage of playing on the home ground makes India the favourites in their first outing.
After beginning their campaign against Spain on January 13, the Men in Blue will face England on January 15 and Wales on January 19.
