Berhampur: A woman, Rahasa Sabar belonging to Dhadi Amba village under Jarada police limits died on Friday. Her death led to tension in the village as the locals alleged that the woman succumbed to injuries inflicted by police personnel during a protest.
The villagers of Dhadi Amba have demanded an inquiry into Sabar’s death and compensation to the family of the deceased whose husband was arrested in connection with a case. Jarada police have registered a case over Sabar’s death and initiated a probe, said sources.
According to reports, the police had arrested two persons including Sabar’s husband Chakara on February 23 over alleged assault and abduction of the local BDO. “When Rahasa was protesting her husband’s arrest, she was beaten by the police. The injuries she inflicted led to her death,” said Chakara’s brother Khali Sabar.
The locals of Dhadi Amba staged a protest on February 20 alleging irregularities in the Panchayat poll in their village under Tumba Panchayat in Patrapur block. The alleged incident of manhandling and abduction of the BDO was an outcome of this protest.
