Bhubaneswar: A wild elephant trampled a 75-year-old woman to death after straying into a residential area in Rourkela on Tuesday.
The deceased woman was attacked in the wee hours of Tuesday while stepping out of her house. The elephant, reportedly separated from its herd, had entered the Kalyani slum on Sector-1 Road. Upon being informed, police arrived at the scene and rushed her to Rourkela Steel General Hospital, where she was declared dead by doctors.
Forest officials have launched a probe into the incident, and a team of 30 personnel is monitoring the elephant’s movement.
The elephant’s presence in the locality has created a sense of fear among residents, with many calling for measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
