Bhubaneswar: Congress legislator Tara Prasad Bahinipati has threatened to commit suicide in the Odisha Assembly if the State Government goes ahead with its decision to completely shut down 14,000 schools across the State from the next academic session.
Addressing media persons on Saturday, Bahinipati said, “The decision to shut down the schools is in violation of the right to education. I have told the Honourable Speaker that if the schools are closed, I will commit suicide in the Assembly.”
Bahinipati emphasised that he will slit his throat inside the Assembly, therefore, the State Government is to decide if they are going to shut down the schools or not.
Earlier on Wednesday, School & Mass Education Minister Samir Ranjan Dash had clarified that the 14,000 schools have been identified based on students’ strength of below 20 across Odisha while below 40 in coastal areas.
He argued, “It’s unfair to teach 18-20 students in a room and impart teachings from Class I to V. With the enactment of RTE (Right To Education), schools mushroomed everywhere. Now, it is being observed that the students are being deprived of the requisite number of classrooms and class teachers. Our State Government’s intention is to provide every student with classroom and class teacher facilities. During our school days, we had availed that.”
