Soro: In yet another incident of alleged dowry death, a woman was killed by her husband and in-laws in Bangu village under Oupada police limits in Odisha’s Balasorer district.
The deceased has been identified as Arati, wife of Bipin Bihari Panda of the said village.
Arati’s father has lodged a complaint at the Oupada police station against Aarti’s husband and in-laws alleging that they killed his daughter for dowry. The accused are said to be absconding to evade police action.
According to reports, Arati and Bipin were married seven years back and have a 5-yearold son. At the time of her marriage, Arati’s parents reportedly gave dowry worth Rs 3 lakh cash, gold ornaments and other items. However, her in-laws demanded more and often tortured Arati mentally and physically to press for her to bring more money from her parents.
Unable to endure the torture, Arati returned to her parents’ house in Bishnupur early this month and narrated her plight to her father and mother. On January 17, Arati’s father-in-law went to her parents’ house and took her back to her in-laws place. However, on January 18, Arati’s parents received a phone call from her in-laws saying that she had committed suicide. When her parents reached her in-laws’ place in Bangu village they found her body at the Khira Community Health Center.
Soon after, Arati’s father registered a dowry death complaint at the Oupada police station alleging that his daughter was killed for dowry. Police visited her in-laws’ place but found it locked as the accused are absconding since the woman’s death.
