Bhubaneswar: A young woman was allegedly set on fire by her brother-in-law and mother-in-law over dowry demands at Kanheipur village under Khallikote police station in Ganjam district on Monday.

The victim, identified as Arati Parida, is currently undergoing treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital with 40 per cent burns.

According to reports, Arati was married to Akash Parida two years ago, and initially, their relationship was smooth. However, over the past few months, Arati’s parents alleged that her in-laws began demanding dowry and subjected her to physical and mental torture.

The situation escalated on Sunday night when Arati’s brother-in-law Prakash and mother-in-law allegedly poured petrol on her and set her on fire after Arati had a heated argument with her mother-in-law.

Arati suffered 40 per cent burns and was rushed to Khalikote hospital. As her condition worsened, she was later shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for further treatment.

Upon being informed, Khalikote police launched an investigation into the incident and are interrogating family members.
