Angul: A woman has been arrested on Wednesday for cheating over Rs 20 lakh from her aunt in Kaniha area of Angul district.
Reportedly, Lily Sahu of Changudia village in Kaniha, after losing her husband, had asked her niece Nibedita Pradhan (34) to live with her as a caretaker.
However, Nibedita took possession of Lily’s bank passbook and ATM card after gaining her trust. She had even stolen Lily’s gold jewellery in 2015.
While Lily was able to get back her gold jewellery after lodging a complaint at Kaniha Police Station, she grew suspicious of Nibedita.
Subsequently, Lily checked her bank account and found that the account was empty. Upon enquiry, Nibedita and her husband confessed that they had taken the money.
They had assured that they will return the money, however, as they have not returned the amount even after four years, Lily approached the Court.
Following it, the court directed Chhendipada Police to conduct a probe into the matter. Police found that over Rs 20 lakh has been transferred from Lily’s account.
Nibedita had transferred Rs 11,98,800 to the account of her husband, Rs 29,000 to her account, spent Rs 1.79 on purchases and had withdrawn Rs 9,84,234 from ATM.
Out of the above amount, Nibedita had only returned Rs 10 lakh to Lily. Based on the findings, police arrested Nibedita and forwarded her to court.
