Berhampur: An elderly woman allegedly committed suicide by consuming toilet cleaner here on Sunday. The deceased was a native of Madhyakhkanda lane under Ganjam NAC. According to reports, the woman was under pressure as her daughter-in-law had staged a dharna in front of her house.
After she fell unconscious, the woman was rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, where she was declared dead. Meanwhile, her daughter-in-law has fled following the woman’s death.
The deceased has been identified as Susama Panda, wife of Narayan Panda, of Madhyakhanda lane under Ganjam police limits.
Their daughter-in-law Tanmayee Panda was sitting on a dhrana alleging torture by the family. Tanmayee married their son Sujit, two years back.
Preliminary probe revealed that unable to cope up with the embarrassment, Susama committed suicide. An investigation is on, the police said.
