Bhubaneswar: A young woman sustained critical bullet injuries on her stomach after being shot at by suspected poachers in a forest near Bodigoba village under Bhanjanagar police limits in Ganjma district.
The incident took place on Saturday evening while Swapna Sahu was plucking sal leaves to make plates with her mother. A bullet struck her while Swapana was busy making bundles.
She fell down and started screaming. Her mother rescued her and took her to the village. However, she couldn’t contact ambulance and kept the injured daughter at her home throughout the night.
On Sunday morning, she took her to Bhanjanagar Hospital in an ambulance. Swapna’s condition is now stable, reports said.
Her mother said that they are dependent on forest produce for their livelihood. They eke out their living by selling forest produce.
She said that she is unaware of the men who shot her daughter in the forest.
It is suspected that poachers who poach wild animals in the forest might shoot the young woman.
Police also reached the hospital and spoke to the mother of the victim. A case has been registered and an inquiry was launched accordingly.
