26 July 2017

Nabrangpur: The State health system is again under the scanner after a nine-month pregnant woman was carried in the middle of the night on a sling for about 4 kms with a plastic covered over her to brave the rains.

It is another case of the deteriorated road conditions in the remote areas, which continue to affect the 108 ambulance services in Odisha. This incident occurred in Nabrangpur district when a pregnant woman named Kalabati hailing from Pahnarikumuda village under Umerkote block experienced labour pain on Tuesday night.

When her family members contacted the 108 ambulance to take her to the hospital, it was unable to reach the destination and waited at the nearest motorable point which was 4 kms away.

Her family members put her in a sling and covered her with a polythene to save her from the rains and moved towards the ambulance in the middle of the night.

The woman, braving all odds gave birth to a baby boy en route hospital on the sling itself, without the knowledge of her family members, according to sources.

When she arrived at the Umerkote Hospital, the authorities informed that the mother and child were stable.
