Rourkela: The decomposed body of an elderly woman was recovered and her mentally-challenged daughter was rescued from a locked house at Basanti Colony under Uditnagar police limits in Rourkela on Monday.
The deceased identified as Manju Puri (70) had lost her husband Narottam Puri to Covid-19 last year. She was staying with her daughter Priyanka (40) who was mentally ill.
It was after neighbours noticed a foul odour and as both the mother and daughter had not come out of their house for the past few days, they grew suspicious and informed the police.
Subsequently, police reached the spot and broke open the house in front of a magistrate.
They recovered the dead body of Manju and rushed Priyanka to Rourkela Government Hospital.
Additional SP Bikram Keshari Bhoi informed that a probe is underway and more details can be ascertained only after the post-mortem of Manju.
