**Mayurbhanj: ** In a very unfortunate incident, a woman named Pramila Tiria gave birth to a baby under a culvert on May 3 as her house was destroyed by a herd of elephant six months ago. This occurred in Sarubila village under Sukruli block in Mayurbhanj district.

After the elephants destroyed her house, Pramila and her husband Manglu built a temporary thatched house in which they were living with their six children. But the Nor’wester rains damaged it few days ago, forcing them to take shelter in the nearby culvert.

The hapless pregnant woman gave birth to her baby in the culvert on May 3, after which a doctor named Dakhina Ranjan Tudu from Raruan community health centre (CHC), rushed to the spot and got the mother-baby admitted in the hospital. Both the mother and the baby are stated to be stable now.

According to Gangadhar Nayak, Additional District Magistrate of Mayurbhanj, “The matter will be looked into by the senior officials.

There are so many Anganwadi workers present there. We will see to it as to how they missed it. Moreover, the BDO will be directed to provide her shelter under the rural housing scheme.
