Jharigaon: A woman was allegedly killed by her fellow villagers over suspicion of practicing witchcraft at Kenduguda village under Jharigaon block in Nabarangpur district.
According to a complaint filed by the deceased Raibari Santa’s daughter Butuli, Raibari was living with her family at Kenduguda village. However, a few villagers used to pick a fight with Raibari accusing her of practicing witchcraft. After being subjected to harassment, Raibari filed a written complaint with Jharigaon police. Police had called both the parties for a settlement.
On March 7, a few villagers Sarathi Santa, Kajali Santa, Muguri Santa, Champa Santa, Paladu Santa and Matiri Santa barged into Raibari’s house when she was asleep and assaulted her apart from using derogatory language for her. Later, they dragged Raibari to the house of Muguri Santa. Butuli and his siblings became so fearful that that they could not gather courage to enter Muguri’s house to ask about their mother’s whereabouts. Since then, Raibari was missing.
Butuli filed a police complaint after she got to know that Raibari’s was buried after being killed.
Jharigaon police team on Monday recovered the body of Raibari which was buried three kilo metres away from the village. The body was recovered in the presence of Tehsildar and magistrate Sankar Patnaik.
Police, later, sent the body to Jharigaon Community Health Centre for post-mortem.
Police detained a few villagers for interrogation after registering a case in this connection.
