Rairangpur Court

Baripada: A local court in Mayurbhanj district on Friday sentenced a woman to life imprisonment for the murder of her infant son.

The woman, identified as Parvati Naik, was convicted by the Additional District and Sessions Judge, Rairangpur, V Sujata, on Friday.

According to the case details, Parvati Naik, a resident of Bankidihi village under Bisoi police station, was the second wife of her husband, with whom she had a son. On September 10 last year, Parvati was home alone while her husband was out and his first wife was working in the fields.

Before leaving the house, Parvati and her husband had an argument. Left alone and upset, Parvati allegedly strangled her one-and-a-half-month-old son in a fit of rage and dumped his body in a pond behind their house.

When her husband returned and asked about their child, Parvati’s evasive responses raised suspicion. He immediately searched the house and surrounding area, eventually discovering the body of his infant son floating in the pond.

Shocked and devastated, he alerted the police, who retrieved the body and sent it for post-mortem. The husband also lodged a formal complaint against Parvati at the Bisoi police station.

Following an investigation, the police arrested Parvati and charged her with murder. After reviewing the evidence and hearing witness testimonies, the court found her guilty and sentenced her to life imprisonment.
