Athagarh: A woman was allegedly thrashed by her in-laws and some villagers and locked inside a room after stripping her clothes over dowry demand at Siaria village under Kanpur police limits in Athagarh sub-division of Cuttack district.
Reportedly, the woman Madhusmita Rout had tied knots with Amaresh of Siaria in 2017. It was her second marriage and she has a daughter from her first husband. As her husband works abroad she and her seven-year-old daughter is staying with her in-laws.
Madhusmita alleged that Amaresh’s family had demanded Rs 9 lakh as dowry for the marriage. Her family was able to pay Rs 5 lakh because of which she is frequently tortured by her in-laws including her husband’s parents, elder brother, and her co-sister.
They had even attacked Amaresh when he tried to defend his wife. As he is currently working in Oman and unable to return home due to the pandemic, the torture knew no bounds.
On Sunday evening, Madhusmita was cooking inside the house when her husband’s elder brother started abusing her. On protesting, she was dragged outside of the house where her in-laws and the villagers attacked her.
Her minor daughter fell on her knees in front of everyone and pleaded with them to spare her mother but to no avail. Finally, Madhusmita was locked inside a house where she had lost her consciousness four to five times.
On getting information, Athagarh SDPO Alok Ranjan Ray along with the police team reached the village and rescued her. She was immediately hospitalised and a case was registered at Kanpur police station. Her in-laws and other involved will be arrested soon, said Ray.
