Bhubaneswar: In a tragic incident, a 27-year-old woman was trampled by an elephant while collecting wood in the forest at Gargadi village under Bishoi police limits in Mayurbhanj district. The deceased, identified as Charmi Naik, was attacked by the elephant and died on the spot.

According to reports, Charmi had gone to the forest with her 1-year-old son, leaving him in a safe place while she collected wood. The elephant suddenly appeared and trampled her. The infant son, who was nearby, was slightly injured but survived.

Locals discovered the incident in the afternoon when they saw the infant screaming near the forest. They found Charmi’s body lying nearby and informed the forest department. Forest officials reached the spot, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem.

The incident is being investigated further by the forest department. Locals, meanwhile, demanded compensation for the family of the deceased.
