**Jagatsinghpur: ** In a bid to intensify the protest against the sale of liquor in their village, hundreds of women reportedly assaulted a man who allegedly had an illegal liquor business. They apparently blackened his face, put a garland of shoes around his neck , thrashed him and paraded him in the village for defying the village decree against sale of alcohol.
This incident occurred at Gadaharishpur under Ersama Police Station in Jagatsinghpur district on Tuesday. The women were members of a women organisation named ‘Jhansi Rani Mahila Mahasangh’ which is known for its movement against alcohol.
They detained the liquor dealer named Maheswar Jena due to his involvement in the sale of liquor in the village. They ransacked the manufacturing unit of the local trader, and seized a number of bottles. They even destroyed the raw materials used for its preparation.
The women have started a campaign to keep the village free of liquor. They condemn consumption and sale of liquor in their village.
It is worth mentioning that few days back, a woman was tied and thrashed by some women activists for selling liquor in Kendrapada.
