Bhubaneswar: November 14 is ‘World Diabetes Day’ and the theme for this year is ‘Access to diabetes care’. On this occasion, the Odisha government has declared that diabetes has emerged as a major global health issue as millions of people are living with the disease. The government has reiterated its commitment to spread further awareness about the disease, promote a healthy lifestyle, and ensure affordable diagnosis and treatment available to people to ensure ‘Sustha Odisha’ (Healthy Odisha).

Taking to its X handle, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik wrote, “On WorldDiabetesDay, we reiterate commitment to spread further awareness about the disease, promote healthy lifestyle and ensure affordable diagnosis and treatment available to people. #SusthaOdisha”

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), about 63 million people in the world will suffer from diabetes by 2024.

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) was founded in Amsterdam in 195 and the World Diabetes Day was established in 1991 in partnership with the World Health Organisation. Later, the United Nations recognised it in 2006, and November 14 is celebrated as World Diabetes Day every year. The birthday of Sir Frederic Baldwin, who discovered insulin, is celebrated as Diabetes Day and it is celebrated in 170 countries across the world.
