Bargarh: The 75th Dhanu Jatra started on Tuesday in Bargarh and will continue till January 6. The festival is being celebrated after a hiatus of two years due to the COVID pandemic.
Bargarh MP Suresh Pujari and MLA Debesh Acharya will inaugurate the 11-day-long festival today evening. Dhanu Jatra is based on Krishna Leela in the mythical Mathura.
During the festival, Bargarh transforms into Mathura. River Jeera symbolically represents river Yamuna and Ambapali, which is located on the other side of the river Jeera, turns into Gopapur.
Kansa is the central character of Dhanu Jatra and a royal court is built where the king gives orders. Hrusikesh Bhoi will play the mythological character Kansa this year.
Several artists from 130 cultural troupes from across the country are scheduled to perform during the festival. Tight security arrangements have been made for the smooth conduct of the festival.
